Assignment #1 Icons
In this assignment, we were tasked with creating simple icons using shape and line to represent various things using only black and white. I chose cooking, rain, and photography. I think I did well creating these icons. I think that the cooking icon could have used more work. I like the basic shapes of the images, however they weren't put together well. Also, I feel that the rain icon would have looked better with more white.
Assignment #2 Textures
In this assignment, we had to create nine texture images. All of them were created using the pen tool and black and white ink. The first three images used the main elements of line and texture. The next three were space and texture. The last three used value and texture and we were able to use grays to create value within the image. I am very proud of my work and am happy with the result of all of my images. I put a lot of time and hard work into these and I feel that it shows in the end product.
Assignment #3 Color Wheel
In this assignment we were tasked to create a color wheel using two rows of images. The images had to correlate with each other; mine were Hello Kitty and her bow on the inside. This assignment taught me about the color wheel and the relations the colors have with each other. I am proud of my work and wouldn't change any of it.
Assignment #4 Pop Art
In this assignment we had to use four color schemes, monochromatic, analogous, complementary, and split complementary, to create a pop art image imitating Andy Warhol's work. This assignment taught me about the different color schemes available to artists. If I could redo the assignment, I would choose a different image so I could use more values and shades.
Assignment #5 Mosaic
The objective of this assignment was to create a photo mosaic using one large image and several small ones that related. This is my favorite assignment so far, I am a huge Harry Potter fan! I had several more small images than was required which I think makes the image more interesting because of the variation. I am very happy with this image, although I wish Harry's face would stand out more in the large image.
Assignment #6 Story Book
This assignment was to create a story book in the style of Stephen Kroninger that would fit into his book If I Crossed the Road. We illustrated a destination that a young child would visit if they were allowed to cross the road. We learned how to use layer masks to hide parts of an image without permanently deleting them. I love the whimsical style that Kroninger uses and I enjoyed emulating his work. In my image, if I crossed the road, I would go to the beach. I am very happy with my result.
Assignment #7 Blend Yourself
The assignment was to blend a picture of yourself into an image of celebrities. I chose the main cast of the movie Mean Girls. We used layer masks in Photoshop. I don't this assignment turned out well. The lighting of my picture doesn't match with the image I used, the shadows are coming from the wrong side. It doesn't look like I am actually in the image.
Assignment #8 See What I'm Saying
This assignment was to take an image and then recreate it using text. We had to choose a word and only use the letters making up that word in our assignment. I used a picture of my dog and chose the word "dachshund" which is the type of dog. I am very proud of my work and happy with my results.
Assignment #9 Design with Type
This assignment was to choose a capital letter, lowercase letter, and number to illustrate principles of design. I think that I effectively used the principles to create interesting images. I am happy with the results.
Assignment #11 Type with Picture
For this assignment, we had to find song lyrics or a poem and then take a picture using our photography composition guidelines that either depicts or relates to the text. I chose the song Through Glass by Stone Sour and used an image that I took early in the morning at my friends cabin. I wanted to use an image that I took specifically for this project, but none of them turned out as well as this one worked, however it does follow our composition guidelines. I'm very happy with the results of this design.
Assignment #12 Alphabet Poster
In this assignment, we had to take pictures of things that looked like the letters of the alphabet. We weren't allowed to create them or manipulate them; they had to be in their natural form. After finding every letter, we had to assemble them on a poster using the principle of rhythm. I achieved rhythm by aligning my images in an organized way and turning every image into grayscale. I am very happy with the result. If I could redo this assignment, I would like to take images of related things, such as trees or things associated with one place. This was a very fun assignment that I would like to recreate!
Assignment #13 Exquisite Corpse
This assignment we worked in groups of three to each create a part of a body to assemble to make an exquisite corpse. My piece was the legs. I feel that my idea didn't turn out well as I would have liked it to. My legs were too small for the rest of the body, so it doesn't look right when it was put together. However, the other sections all work nicely together.
Assignment #14 Career Poster
For this assignment, we were tasked to create a poster advertising a career relating to the graphic design industry. We had to research our given careers, and provide information on the poster while making the viewer interested in the profession. The career I was given was Publication Designer. I am proud of my work and enjoyed the assignment as it informed me of several different career opportunities.
Assignment #15 Illuminated Manuscript
This assignment was to create an illuminated manuscript with an initial cap. The text on the page is song lyrics. I am pleased with my initial cap and background, but if I could redo the assignment, I would add more detail to the borders of the page.
Assignment #16 History Timeline
For this assignment, we compiled information learned from history podcasts into an infographic. I like the title section of my design, but I'm not very happy with the overall layout. I think that it needs a better visual organization.
Assignment #17 Combination Mark
This assignment was to create a combination mark logo. I originally created a logo with a toothbrush, but the design wasn't working. I am happy with the result of this logo and am glad that I was able to learn from a failed design.
Assignment #18 Word Mark
This assignment was to create a word mark logo. I am happy with and proud of the result of my logo.
Assignment #19 Stationery Package
For this assignment, we had to create a stationary package composed of a business card, envelope, and letterhead. The name of my company was The Candy Shop. I am overall pleased with my work, but if I were to recreate the assignment, I would add more interest to the business card. I wanted all of the pieces to be fun and exciting, like a candy shop should be.
Assignment #20 Social Issue Poster
This assignment was to create a poster inspired by the Obama "Hope" poster by Shepard Fairey in support of a major social issue; I chose education. I think my poster turned out very nice and I love this style of work.
