1) Why is it important to identify safety issues and to safely operate equipment utilized in the classroom?
This is important because it can keep you and others safe in your workspace.

2) How do interpersonal and employability skills affect your every day life and your future?
These skills can help you get and maintain a career. It can also improve your relationships with people in your every day life.

3) What is graphic design and why is it important to communicate visually?
Graphic design is the art of combining images and type to display a message. It is important so you'll be able to overcome language barriers. Also, you can display and communicate a message that may be difficult to get across verbally or in another way.

4) What is a vector-based design and how is it created? 
A vector-based design is an image created using shapes, lines, points and curves that are based on mathematical equations in computer graphics programs. These images can be scaled to larger sizes without distorting the image. In this class, we use Adobe Illustrater to create vector-based images.

5) What is a vector-based design and how is it created?
A vector based design is an easily scalable image that is created using paths in Adobe Illustrator.

6) How is color used effectively in a graphic design?
Color can maximize productivity, minimize visual fatigue, and relax the body.

7) What is a raster-based image and how is it created?
A raster based image is an image made up of pixels that is created using Photoshop.

8) How does the manipulation of size and resolution effect digital images?
Changing the size and resolution can change the size and quality of the image and change the quality when it is viewed online and when it is printed.

9) What are the principles of design and how can they be used within a design?
Repetition - repeat an aspect or element throughout a design. Proportion/scale - the relative size of various objects in a design. Balance - distribution of heavy and light objects on a page. Emphasis - stressing a particular area of focus. Unity - wholeness of a composition. Variety - differences and diversity. Figure/ground - positive and negative space. Rhythm - continuity, recurrence, or organized movement. Contrast - two related elements are different.

10) What is the function of type within a design?


Type in a design can inform the reader and express an idea, or it can serve as a visual aid to add variety to a design.

11) How do designers use a page layout program?
Designers use a page layout program such as Adobe InDesign to compile their images and text into one page. They create the images in other programs and use the layout program to arrange them into a design.

12) What steps does a designer take to design a page layout from concept to final product?

A designer uses the steps in the creative process: Research, brainstorm, sketch, execute, and critique and revise.

13) What are the key developments in the history of visual communication? How do these developments shape our industry?
Developments include cave paintings, cuneiform, hieroglyphics, the Phoenician alphabet, the Greek alphabet, the Roman alphabet, the codex and illuminated manuscript, the gutenberg press, the linotype machine, photography, and computers. Each of these are steps of humans evolving their way of visual communication. With each development, humans turn their communication into more of an art form. We are inspired by each period of development, imitating and using their styles and methods and learning from them as well.

14) What careers are available within the field of graphic design? What professional organizations are associated with the industry?
There is a multitude of careers and organizations available to graphic designers. Some careers include publication designer, production artist, graphic designer, art director, creative director, illustrator, web design, package design, comic book artist, computer animation, freelancer, story board artist, copy writer, portrait photographer, documentary photographer, advertising photographer, editorial photographer, fashion photographer, sports photographer, and photojournalism. Some organizations include AIGA, PIAG, SPD, PPA, APA, NAPP, and NPPA.

15) What is a logotype and how is it created?
A logotype is a graphic mark used to promote instant recognition of a company. A logotype can be either a wordmark, made up of only text, or a combination mark, made up of both text and image. An effective and successful logotype should be simple, memorable, timeless, versatile, and appropriate.
